Viruses

During the past week, have been plagued by the dreaded computer virus at work. Normally a very careful person with such things, I can not explain away this lack of discretion, of inadvertently executing an unknown executable file. Granted it was on one of our network drives (hence assumed to be ‘clean’), and I was just killing sometime before getting off work, and expecting to see some cute Windows screen saver or such things… Well, suffice it to say, a few minutes’ handiwork can sometimes lead to hours of additional labour. In the end, reinstall – as is typical for Windows users!

For those not in Singapore. The SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) is causing havoc in Asia, and some other parts of the world. It seems this virus will be here to stay. The only safe method of prevention at this stage is to stay healthy (good diet and healthy living) and maintain good personal hygiene.

Seems we just can’t escape from these viruses, one way or another.

Picking up the pieces

From time to time, things happen for no apparent reason, and we are then left to pick up the pieces. A couple of months ago, in a hurry to get out of the house, I accidentally knocked over a small ceramic pen-holder. It fell to the ground and shattered into many pieces. I was naturally quite upset since it was a gift from a friend. It felt like a small breach of trust, since something meaningful entrusted to me is irrevocably damaged.

Of course, what was done could not be reversed, and there was no return to how things were. Life goes on. So, making the best of a bad situation, I attempted to put the pieces back together with the help of some super glue. I will post pictures of my effort next time.

What does it prove, you may ask? Well, for a start, super glue can do wonders! Seriously though, this incident reminds me once again of the impermanency of things in our lives. If we treasure the friendships we share or shared, what is in a memento?

Revisit

Tonight, decided to check out a site which I had previously bookmarked but thought I had already lost. Fortunately I vaguely remembered some keywords which allowed me to find it again.

This site was a chance discovery way back when I first started blogging. At the time, I wanted to get some ideas on what to write, how to lay out the site, etc. This site’s owner, also a relatively new comer to blogging and to :mt:, had posted some questions at the :mt: Forum.

Celebrity!

It seems someone out there does have a sense of humour!? Guess by this stage, somehow or other, we have all seen the (in)famous Iraqi Information Minister dishing out his daily denials of American attacks in Iraq? Well, having attained an unfortunate celebrity status, here is a site dedicated to him. Well, let’s hope that he will resurface someday to accept this honour!

First blood

Today I donated blood at the blood donation drive at work. Being a first-timer, I was a little apprehensive at first. Well, it did not really help that much if the guy next to me felt giddy halfway through and had to stop and rest! Needless to say, I came back in one piece. Took less time than I thought. Guess I am just very healthy with a fast flow!?
