Catching up

As of 2pm yesterday, I have jumped on the band wagon of digital photography. I finally bought a digital camera, after much self-debate and research, not to mention some recently missed chances… 🙂

When getting a new gadget, given the pace of change in technology these days, my philosophy has always been to get the tool that is sufficient for my current and immediate future needs (and maybe future). This naturally rules out many of the latest and greatest stuff!

Go with the flow?

Upon discovering some truth which runs counter to things you have been brought up to believe in (where there is no doubt to the authenticity of the “new” truth incidentally), there seems to be three common reactions:

  1. Go with what you believe in, even if the whole world thinks you are nuts.
  2. Begrudgingly accept that everyone else is inferior to you but, for day-to-day social acceptance, need to lower yourself to their levels .
  3. Ignore the truth and stick to what you always knew to be correct, and live happily ever after, secure in the knowledge that your world is safe from intrusions.

Which would you choose?

Charitable coercion

Recently there has been a spate of charity and fund-raising functions in Singapore. No doubt the intentions are generally good. However, inevitably there will be some who become overly eager and end up adopting the ‘hard-sell’ tactics. Worse still are those who feel that they are somehow more superior and berate others into giving ‘voluntarily’ to charity.

I don’t think this is right.

Perpetuity

Stressed from work? Family? Relationship problems? Maybe time to step back re-examine the significance of it all!?

“The next time you’re feeling stressed out or are facing a difficult challenge, think about sitting in a graveyard, and look at the years on the headstones: 1925-1973, 1934-1987… Our entire existence will one day be represented by a single dash. Ask yourself, how important is this situation in the context of that dash? Will I even remember this situation 10 years from now? No? Then let it go now…”

Easter thoughts

Tomorrow is Easter. For me, Easter is not just time to reflect upon what Christ has done. It is also a time to think about how mankind can live in harmony, without prejudices and without inadvertently destroying mother Earth in the meantime.

In Christianity, the God of the New Statement, unlike the God of the Old Testament, seems to be characterised by love and compassion. Here is a quote on love for ourselves.

“What do I mean by loving ourselves properly? I mean first of all, desiring to live, accepting life as a very great gift and a great good, not because of what it gives us, but because of what it enables us to give to others.”
